The Socio-Economic and Accountability Project (SERAP) has revealed its intention to take legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This decision comes in response to Akpabio's purported allocation of "holiday allowances" to members of the Senate.
During a recent plenary session on August 10, Akpabio initially made remarks about the provision of enjoyment allowances to the lawmakers. However, he subsequently retracted his statement and instead mentioned that "prayers" had been forwarded to them.
Akpabio's revelation about the holiday allowance for senators was delivered as follows: "To facilitate an enjoyable holiday period for all of us, a nominal sum has been transmitted to our respective accounts by the Clerk of the National Assembly." This statement triggered a wave of criticism on social media from Nigerians who contended that the lawmakers seemed to be casually distributing money, while a significant portion of the population grapples with the financial strain resulting from the removal of the fuel subsidy.
In light of the public backlash, SERAP took to Twitter on the morning of August 10 to announce its plans to file a lawsuit against Senate President Akpabio regarding the alleged disbursement of "holiday allowances." The organization's tweet stated: "We are initiating legal action against Senate President Godswill Akpabio for the reported disbursement of 'holiday allowances' by the Clerk of the National Assembly into the accounts of senators, especially at a time when approximately 137 million economically disadvantaged Nigerians are facing acute financial hardships."
