Muhammadu Sanusi II, renowned as the 14th Emir of Kano and prominent leader of the Tijjaniyah Muslim Group in Nigeria, recently made a significant visit to Niamey, the capital city of Niger Republic.
During his stay, he held a confidential meeting with General Tchani, the leader of the military junta. Captured in both a video shared by Daily Trust and images posted by Leadership on their Twitter handles, Sanusi, who also served as the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), was observed engaging in discussions with the military officials, presumably concerning the ongoing political developments in the nation.
The circumstances surrounding Sanusi's journey to Niger Republic remain somewhat enigmatic. The West African country, which recently severed diplomatic relations with Nigeria due to Nigeria's position against the military rule in Niger Republic, saw Sanusi's presence raise questions about his role and intent in the scenario.
In a related context, President Bola Tinubu, who holds the position of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) chairman, has taken the lead in denouncing the coup that toppled the democratic government in Niger Republic. As the deadline for the ultimatum passed, the Nigerian presidency declared additional sanctions aimed at the supporters of the coup, specifying that the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) would oversee the implementation of these measures.
Amid these developments, the West African bloc has arranged another assembly scheduled for Thursday, August 10, to address the situation. Notably, the Nigerian presidency affirmed that the prospect of a military intervention remained viable among the options under consideration by ECOWAS.
