The arrests were made promptly after the killing of Angbashim, who was gruesomely dismembered by a cult group led by David Gift Okpala Okpolowu, also known as 2baba, in Ahoada East.
Notable among those arraigned and remanded are the former Chairman of Ahoada East LGA, Cassidy Ikegbidi, Eze Ekpeye Logbo, and His Royal Majesty Eze, Ngozi Angwo. Despite being arraigned by the Commissioner of Police, the defendants did not enter their pleas.
During the proceedings, a bail application by one of the defendants' lawyers, Dejo Lamikara, faced opposition from the prosecuting lawyer, SP Eniyepere Sikpi. However, the trial Judge, Justice Sika Aprioku, after considering the arguments, ordered the defendants to be remanded in the correctional centre. The case has been adjourned until November 21 for plea and bail consideration.
In response to the situation, youths and the student community in Ekpeye have called for an end to the politicization of killings in their area. Adokiye Oyagiri, the Secretary-General of Ekpeye Youth Worldwide in Port Harcourt, expressed concern about some individuals using the incidents to make unfounded accusations against the leader of the state House of Assembly, Edison Ehie, who represents Ahoada East Constituency II.
Oyagiri emphasized the importance of addressing insecurity but cautioned against making baseless allegations. He pointed out that despite the governor offering a N100 million bounty on the killers of the DPO, there has been no update from the police on whether they have been apprehended. Oyagiri also highlighted recent killings in the area, underscoring the lack of details and timely information provided by the authorities.
