The Lagos State Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bishop Stephen Adegbite, has expressed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's decision to remove fuel subsidies, asserting that Nigerians stand to benefit more from this move.
Speaking at a media conference in Abuja on August 3rd, Bishop Adegbite, who also serves as the Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ikeja Diocese, emphasized the importance of the government's plan for local refining of petroleum.
In light of the organized labor's protests against the subsidy removal, Bishop Adegbite urged the National Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to reconsider their stance and suspend further actions. He stressed that while the removal of fuel subsidy might come with some temporary hardships, the focus should be on the judicious and accountable utilization of the funds saved from the subsidy.
Addressing his support for Tinubu's administration, Bishop Adegbite stated that as a Christian leader, he feels obliged to speak on these matters and that his endorsement is rooted in a belief in Tinubu's commitment to fulfill promises made to the people and ensure their sustainable prosperity. He urged the government to maintain transparency and remain accountable to the Nigerian populace.
The backing from Lagos CAN adds another dimension to the ongoing debate over fuel subsidies, as the religious community aligns itself with Tinubu's administration in its efforts to bring about policy changes for the greater good of the country.
