The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has given the directive for its standby force to intervene and reinstate the constitutional order in Niger Republic. According to a report from The Nation, ECOWAS has reconvened discussions regarding the crisis in Niger in Abuja.
Omar Alieu Touray, the President of ECOWAS, announced this decision while presenting ECOWAS' resolution on the Niger coup during an extraordinary meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.
The organization also urged the African Union (AU), partner nations, and institutions to lend their support to the resolution put forth by ECOWAS. The sub-regional body conveyed that all attempts at engaging in dialogue with the Niger military junta have been met with defiance from the coup leaders. These leaders continue to denounce the ongoing detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and his family members.
The resolution's contents include the following statements: "Instruct the Chief of Defence Staff committee to immediately activate the ECOWAS standby force, complete with all its components. Direct the deployment of the ECOWAS standby force to reestablish the constitutional order in the Republic of Niger. Emphasize its unwavering dedication to achieving the restoration of constitutional order through peaceful methods."
