In a surprising turn of events, President Bola Tinubu publicly endorsed Senator Godswill Akpabio for the position of Senate Presidency, only to face opposition from three Senators-elect shortly after.
Abdul'aziz Yari, Jimoh Ibrahim, and Elisha Abbo have called for a counter meeting scheduled to take place on June 9 at 9 pm in Abuja's Fraiser Suites.
The notice for the meeting was signed by Abbo, who gained notoriety four years ago as the 'Sex Toy Senator' after a video of him slapping a young girl in a sex toy shop went viral. Abbo, along with Jimoh Ibrahim, is currently leading the charge for the emergence of former Zamfara State Governor, Abdul'aziz Yari, as the new Senate President, going against President Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress' (APC) choice.
During a gathering with the newly elected lawmakers from the Senate and the House of Representatives in Abuja, President Tinubu reiterated his stance and that of the ruling APC on the selection of Senators Godswill Akpabio and Jibrin Barau as the 10th Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively.
He congratulated all the lawmakers and expressed his administration's desire to work harmoniously with the 10th National Assembly in the best interest of the public.
Except for Abdul'aziz Yari, Jimoh Ibrahim, and Elisha Abbo, legislators-elect from the ruling APC in both chambers attended the meeting with the President at the Presidential Villa, emphasizing the party's unchanged position regarding the selection of presiding officers.
Tinubu reportedly emphasized the need for national unity and fairness by stating that since the President and Vice President are of the Muslim faith, it is only natural to grant the position of Senate President to a Christian citizen, as a means of preserving Christianity in the country.
However, Abbo strongly asserted that lawmakers should have the freedom to choose their leaders without interference from the President or the ruling party. Based on their calculations, the group is proposing the former governor for the position of Senate President, with Jimoh Ibrahim from Ondo State as his deputy.
Currently, the ongoing power struggle and irreconcilable differences over the selection of leaders for the 10th National Assembly have caused turmoil within the national leadership of the ruling APC.
