Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) members at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic in Owo, Ondo State, have unanimously voted in favor of an industrial action to address their grievances regarding 13 months of unpaid salaries.
As a sign of protest, the lecturers have declared that they will not participate in the upcoming first-semester examinations scheduled to commence next week.
During the ASUP Congress held last Thursday, the resolution to initiate an indefinite strike starting from June 13th, 2023, was reached. A communiqué released by the union's Chairman, Comrade Arikawe Ade, and Secretary, Comrade Fapetu Damilola, emphasized the urgent need for the full payment of the outstanding salary arrears owed to the staff members of the institution.
The communiqué stated, "It is imperative that all 13 months of salary arrears are settled in their entirety for the institution's staff. This decision is binding on all financial members of ASUP." Comrade Arikawe highlighted the challenges faced by lecturers due to the accumulation of unpaid salaries and appealed to Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for support in resolving the issue.
Furthermore, the lecturers expressed that their hardships have been further exacerbated by the recent increase in fuel prices.
