Senate President, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has expressed deep concern over the growing presence of hoodlums within the premises of the National Assembly complex. Addressing the issue during a courtesy call by members of the National Assembly Service Commission in Abuja, Akpabio highlighted the alarming security breach caused by these individuals loitering around the Senate and Representatives wings, harassing lawmakers and staff.
As the 10th National Assembly commences its legislative activities, the Senate President lamented the deteriorating infrastructure, untidy environment, and overall lack of security. He revealed that lawmakers have faced unfortunate incidents of losing their phones and other valuables to these hoodlums who position themselves strategically in front of offices.
While acknowledging the efforts made to ensure staff comfort, Akpabio stressed that it is vital to address the infrastructural decay and maintain a clean and secure complex. He emphasized the significance of the National Assembly as a symbol of democracy and expressed the 10th Senate's determination to make history through its legislative work.
Responding to issues raised by the Chairman of the NASC, Ahmed Kadi Amshi, regarding staff allowances, Akpabio acknowledged the significant resources allocated to staff welfare but emphasized that other crucial matters also require attention.
In light of these challenges, Amshi urged lawmakers to promptly submit the list of their legislative aides for documentation, with a target of completing the process by September.
As the National Assembly strives to fulfill its legislative responsibilities, addressing these issues of security, infrastructure, and cleanliness remains a top priority for Senate President Akpabio and his colleagues in the 10th Assembly.
