France's ambassador to Niger will remain stationed in the Sahel nation, as confirmed by President Emmanuel Macron, despite mounting pressure from leaders following a recent coup. Macron expressed this resolve on Monday during a significant address to ambassadors in Paris, where he also reiterated France's unwavering support for Niger's ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The French President commended Bazoum's courageous decision not to step down and assured that France would back any military intervention by The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in Niger.
Amidst a backdrop of diplomatic tensions, Macron acknowledged the challenging circumstances faced by France and its diplomats in various nations. He highlighted the exemplary conduct in Sudan and the ongoing situation in Niger, where French envoy Sylvain Itte was presently stationed in Niamey, despite being issued a 48-hour ultimatum to depart the country by the previous Friday.
Bazoum's removal on July 26 and his subsequent confinement, along with his family, within the presidential palace, following the coup, have drawn widespread condemnation from France and many neighboring countries of Niger. ECOWAS has been actively engaged in diplomatic negotiations with the coup leaders, indicating a willingness to deploy troops if diplomatic efforts falter, with the objective of reinstating constitutional order.
Notably, on the preceding Friday, Niger's Ministry of Foreign Affairs declared a 48-hour window for French ambassador Itte to leave the country, citing his refusal to engage with the new authorities and alleging actions by the French government contrary to Niger's interests.
Reaffirming France's stance against the coup, Macron stressed his country's commitment to condemning the unconstitutional power shift and offering steadfast support to Bazoum. Macron emphasized the appropriateness of this policy, anchored in the courage displayed by President Bazoum and the dedication of the French ambassador who, despite considerable pressure and unwarranted declarations from illegitimate sources, remains resolute on the ground.
