President Bola Tinubu is set to engage in crucial discussions with opposition senators and members of the House of Representatives on Monday.
The lawmakers received an official invitation, conveyed by Tijanni Umar, the Permanent Secretary of the State House, acting on behalf of the President's Chief of Staff. The communication requested their attendance at the meeting and urged them to submit their lists for security clearance.
The meeting has been scheduled in two segments, with the opposition senators slated to meet the president at 3pm, followed by the representatives at 5pm.
The primary objective of the gathering is said to be the president's effort to persuade the lawmakers to throw their support behind the ruling party's candidate for the leadership positions in the National Assembly.
As per the latest updates, the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee has nominated Godswill Akpabio from the South-south region and Barau Jibrin from the North-west as its choices for the positions of Senate President and Deputy Senate President, respectively.
In addition, Tajudeen Abbas from the North-west and Ben Kalu from the South-east have been endorsed by the APC for the roles of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.
However, the proposed zoning formula and the party's nominations have faced opposition from some APC lawmakers. These dissenting members have expressed their determination to pursue their own ambitions rather than aligning with the party's endorsed candidates.
