NiMet Issues Warning About Reduced Visibility in Northern States

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a warning to the public regarding the potential deterioration of visibility in certain northern states. This deterioration is expected to occur due to a dust haze that has moved into the country from its source region.

According to NiMet, stations in the source region, including locations in Chad like Faya-Largeau, Bol-Berim, Mongo, Abeche, and Ndjamena, have been reporting horizontal visibility ranging from 800 meters to 4000 meters. Additionally, areas in Niger that share borders with northern Nigeria, such as Diffa, Maine-Soroa, Goure, Bila, Maradi, Zinder, and Birni-n-Konni, have reported poor visibility due to dust haze, with horizontal visibility ranging from 1000 meters to 3000 meters over the past 24 hours.

NiMet explained that strong winds are expected to carry the suspended dust particles into some northern states, further reducing horizontal visibility. As a result, there is a likelihood of moderate to poor horizontal visibility due to Dust Haze in the northern parts of the country, particularly in Katsina, Kano, Nguru, Jigawa Potiskum, and Maiduguri within the next 24 hours.

The agency advised the public to take necessary precautions, especially individuals with respiratory ailments, as the current weather conditions may not be suitable for their health. Additionally, NiMet recommended that airline operators stay informed by utilizing weather reports from the agency to plan their operations effectively.
