In a meeting with the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria (NCTRN) at Aso Rock, President Bola Tinubu expressed his belief that Nigeria should no longer act as a generous benefactor to neighboring countries through petrol subsidies.
He emphasized that his administration made the right choice in eliminating the subsidy, referring to it as a burden that could have crippled the country's finances, particularly when struggling to meet salary obligations.
Tinubu stated that Nigeria should not continue to provide subsidized petrol to neighboring nations, likening the subsidy to playing the role of "Father Christmas" year-round. Abiodun Oladunjoye, the villa's director of information, quoted the president as expressing gratitude for the attention given to his actions, particularly the removal of the subsidy.
Tinubu acknowledged the importance of receiving counsel and assured the traditional rulers of his administration's openness to their concerns. He emphasized that while they may not always achieve perfection, it is crucial to make the right decisions for the country 90 percent of the time.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar, also expressed full support for Tinubu's government, believing that under his leadership and with the will of Allah, Nigeria would progress.
