In a significant development, the Nigerian Senate has successfully passed a crucial bill that aims to incorporate education on sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) into the secondary school curriculum.
The bill, titled "Mandatory inclusion of preventive measures on sexual and gender-based violence into the curriculum of all levels of secondary schools in Nigeria," was approved during a plenary session presided over by Deputy Senate President Ovie Omo-Agege.
The bill was sponsored by Senate Leader Ibrahim Gobir, who emphasized the importance of enabling secondary school students to be aware of the potential risks associated with SGBV. Gobir further stated that the legislation would effectively combat the escalating rates of SGBV cases, safeguard children, and prevent related violations.
According to Gobir, the bill's implementation offers a cost-effective and sustainable solution to address the prevailing issues of SGBV, child protection rights, and offenses such as sexual violence, rape, and harassment.
Experts have highlighted the need for comprehensive interventions involving individuals, groups, and systematic measures within schools, encompassing students, teachers, administrators, and parents. The early introduction of this educational enlightenment to students is expected to reduce SGBV cases and raise awareness about potential dangers, enabling children to identify warning signs and take necessary precautions.
Additionally, the initiative will provide students with appropriate channels for reporting incidents.
The ultimate objective is to ensure that at least 80 percent of participating students acquire satisfactory knowledge within a year of the program's implementation for each cohort. By instilling this knowledge in students, they will in turn pass it on to their siblings, friends, and future generations.
This systematic approach presents a sustainable solution to effectively address the problem of SGBV.
