Top officials from the Federal Government and organised labour have gathered at the Presidential Villa in Abuja for a crucial meeting aimed at addressing the repercussions of the recent removal of petrol subsidies. The discussions, which commenced at 5:30 pm on Monday, are focused on finding solutions to the concerns raised by labour unions, including the demand for an increased minimum wage and proposed palliative measures put forth by the government.
This meeting comes after the previous round of negotiations held on June 5, 2023, where both the Federal Government and labour representatives, including the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, agreed to continue deliberations and work towards finalizing the resolutions. The official resolution stated, "The labour centres and the Federal Government will convene on June 19, 2023, to establish an implementation framework."
Among the attendees are the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, leading a delegation from the NLC, and the President of the Trade Union Congress, Festus Osifo, leading the TUC delegation. Notable figures from the government side include the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, the Special Adviser to the President on Revenue, Zachaeus Adedeji, the Special Adviser for Energy, Olu Verheijen, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Kachallom Daju.
Also present at the meeting are key industry figures, including the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Mele Kyari, the representatives of the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, Farouk Ahmed, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, Gbenga Komolafe, among others. The gathering signifies the importance and urgency attached to finding common ground and reaching a consensus on the pressing issues at hand.
