The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has strongly criticized the Federal Government for its continuous and staggering increases in fuel prices, which are driving inflation to alarming levels and making life increasingly unbearable for Nigerians.
In a recent statement issued by the National Co-Spokesperson of CUPP, Mr. Mark Adebayo, the coalition expressed deep concern over the abrupt price hike, which came barely a month after the fuel price was already increased by over 300% on May 29th of the current year.
Adebayo pointed out that the latest increase in petrol prices, initiated by NNPCL, is having severe and far-reaching impacts on other goods and services, plunging most Nigerians into extreme poverty and unprecedented economic difficulties.
CUPP raised suspicions that the government's removal of fuel subsidies might be a disguised plan to subject Nigerians to perpetual economic slavery, as the relentless fuel price hikes seem to be leading to soaring inflation and unbearable living conditions for the general population.
The coalition emphasized that no responsible government would abandon its citizens to the mercy of unpredictable and inhumane market forces without implementing robust measures to protect them. Such a policy is seen as not only antisocial but also outrageously unjust.
CUPP called upon President Bola Tinubu to demonstrate his compassion as a leader and ensure that NNPCL is not under the influence of the same forces that misappropriated fuel subsidy funds in the past, leading to its removal. The fear is that these forces might have found a backdoor method to continue exploiting subsidies and burdening Nigerians with economic hardship.
The coalition demanded urgent action from the government to reverse the recent fuel price hikes and prevent any clandestine future plans to further increase petrol prices, which would undoubtedly escalate the suffering of Nigerians. CUPP expressed concern about the impact of such policies on the well-being of the common people and questioned when Nigerians would be free from the economic woes caused by their government's actions.
