A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled in favor of Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), an organization demanding transparency in the Nigerian government.
The court has ordered President Bola Tinubu's administration to disclose the details of the spending of approximately $5 billion from the Abacha loot, which was stolen by General Sani Abacha. The court further demanded information regarding the total amount of money stolen by Abacha, the amount of Abacha loot that has been recovered, and any agreements made by former presidents Obasanjo, Yar’Adua, Jonathan, and Buhari regarding the loot.
According to Channels TV, Justice James Kolawole Omotosho delivered the judgment, granting SERAP's Freedom of Information suit. The court directed the Ministry of Finance to provide the requested information within seven days, as reported by Daily Trust. The judge held that SERAP is entitled to the information on the spending details of the Abacha loot, emphasizing that the organization need not demonstrate any special interest in the information sought.
The decision of the court has been hailed as a significant step toward promoting accountability and transparency in the recovery and utilization of the Abacha loot, SERAP's successful legal action underscores the importance of access to information in combating corruption and ensuring good governance in Nigeria.
