In a significant development, Nigeria has been chosen by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) to occupy a vacant seat in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the global organization's economic branch.
Starting from January 1 of the following year, Nigeria will serve a three-year term in this position.
Remarkably, Nigeria received unanimous support from all 191 member states present in the assembly hall, making it the sole country to secure the votes of all members. There were no abstentions or votes against Nigeria's candidacy.
Joining Nigeria on the Council are 17 other countries, namely France, Germany, Haiti, Japan, Kenya, Liechtenstein, Mauritania, Nepal, Pakistan, Paraguay, Poland, Senegal, Spain, Suriname, the United Kingdom, Uruguay, and Zambia.
In addition to Nigeria's election, the UNGA also conducted a by-election to fill a vacant seat in the Western European and Others Group, which was previously held by Greece.
Türkiye emerged as the elected member, and their term will commence in January of the following year, extending all the way through December 2052.
Furthermore, during the same election, UNGA members also voted to address the ongoing vacancy within the Eastern European Group.
