Governors belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are expected to nominate three individuals from their respective states as candidates for ministerial positions in the ongoing contest for President Bola Tinubu's cabinet. Sources within Tinubu's camp disclosed that there is a possibility of submitting the ministerial list to the Senate for confirmation, with the aim of having the ministers appointed by July.
Since the recent inauguration of the National Assembly, Nigerians have eagerly awaited the composition of Tinubu's cabinet, as it is seen as crucial for expediting the governance process.
While former President Muhammadu Buhari took six months to form his cabinet, people anticipate that Tinubu will announce his cabinet members at the earliest, considering his early actions in making economic decisions and appointing special aides.
Recently, President Tinubu released a list of eight Special Advisers, having already obtained Senate approval for 12 Special Advisers. These appointments are a precursor to the selection of ministers, who hold higher ranks within the cabinet and have authority over various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government.
According to the Constitution, each state is entitled to have one minister, allowing for a total of 36 ministers (including ministers and ministers of state). The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors will have a say in determining the nominees from their respective states. In non-APC states, unsuccessful governorship candidates from the 2023 elections and party leaders are likely to influence the selection of ministerial candidates.
Sources revealed that APC governors may have been requested to submit three names from each state, giving President Tinubu the prerogative to choose one as a minister.
Interestingly, some of the potential nominees for ministerial positions were appointed as Special Advisers by Tinubu last Thursday. Notably, Mr. Dele Alake was appointed as Special Adviser for Special Duties, Communications, and Strategy, while Mr. Wale Edun became the Special Adviser for Monetary Policies. Both individuals had been previously rumored as potential ministerial nominees, with Alake speculated to head the Information Ministry and Edun to take charge of the Finance Ministry.
