The Anambra State Police Command has provided an update on the recent attack on the convoy of United States Embassy officials in the state.
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the incident. According to Commissioner of Police Echeng Echeng, as soon as the Command received information about the attack, the police swiftly took action. They searched and raided a camp used by the gunmen but found it completely abandoned. However, they managed to apprehend two individuals who are now assisting in the investigation.
The Commissioner revealed that a total of seven deaths occurred during the attack.
The victims include Jefferson Obayuwane, a retired Department of State Service personnel, Sunday Ubong, Ekene Nweke, Hassan Etila, Avwuvie Kaye Monday, Bukar Kabuiki (a police officer), Emmanuel Lukpata (a police officer), Friday Morgan (a police officer), and Adamu Andrew (a police officer). Among the casualties were three US Consulate officials and four police escorts. Two other Consulate officials are still missing.
The police officers involved were of inspectorate rank and belonged to Squadron 23 of the Police Mobile Force in Lagos.
The bodies of the deceased have been recovered and taken to a morgue. The Anambra State Command, along with other security agencies, is working tirelessly in coordination with the state government to locate and rescue the missing officials.
The Commissioner stated that the arrested individuals' phone conversations have been traced, and the Command is gradually closing in on the perpetrators. Preliminary investigations indicate that the attack occurred when five US Consulate officials and four armed mobile police escorts from Lagos were traveling in a convoy of two vehicles. The assailants opened fire on them and set their vehicles on fire.
