President Buhari Emphasizes Respect for National Assembly's Independence and Productive Collaboration
The President reaffirmed his commitment to respecting the independence of the National Assembly and highlighted the successful partnership between the Executive and the Legislature during his tenure.
Speaking at the inauguration of the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja, President Buhari hailed the 9th National Assembly as the most productive in the past four years, both in terms of output and outcomes.
Acknowledging the vital role of the Legislature in a democratic system, Buhari stated that the harmonious relationship between the Executive and the Legislature had been instrumental in the accomplishments of his administration. He stressed that the Legislature serves as the cornerstone of democracy, ensuring that the aspirations of Nigerians are considered in the lawmaking process and overseeing government spending aligns with legislative intent.
Since his election in 2015, Buhari expressed his support for an independent National Assembly, allowing it to decide its leadership and shape its agenda based on the All Progressives Congress (APC) manifesto.
The President refrained from interfering in legislative affairs, fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect and collaboration between the two arms of government. The positive outcomes achieved by Nigeria under his administration demonstrate the significance of a harmonious relationship between the Executive and the Legislature.
President Buhari commended the National Assembly's achievements, including the passage of an unprecedented number of bills into law, allocation of funds for critical infrastructure, implementation of governmental reforms, and addressing long-standing challenges hindering economic growth and development.
Notable successes encompassed oil and gas sector reforms, electoral framework strengthening, economic diversification, transparency and accountability improvements, security challenges, and the establishment of good governance practices.
Highlighting the potential of Nigeria's youthful population, Buhari emphasized the importance of harnessing their capabilities to drive industrialization and economic development.
Senate President Ahmad Lawan lauded President Buhari's commitment, mentioning that he had signed over 100 bills passed by the National Assembly. He further emphasized the collaborative efforts of the Ninth National Assembly and the Executive in expediting critical infrastructure delivery nationwide.
Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila emphasized that the Legislature's effectiveness in holding the Executive accountable relied on its internal capacity, both human and financial.
He echoed the significance of the fruitful partnership between the two arms of government in constructing and rehabilitating roads, bridges, and rail lines across all six geo-political zones of Nigeria. Gbajabiamila concluded by recognizing President Buhari's unwavering dedication in steering Nigeria towards a new path of progress.
