The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) in Nigeria has issued a warning to consumers regarding a batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles that are being circulated in the country and found to be contaminated with particles.
The discovery of this tainted product came about after a consumer complaint was received and subsequently investigated by NAFDAC's post-marketing surveillance unit. In their statement released on Saturday, the agency revealed that during the investigation, they found over five crates of the implicated batch of Sprite 50cl glass bottles to be contaminated with particles. To ensure consumer safety, samples from the affected batch have been taken to the NAFDAC laboratory for thorough analysis.
In response to this incident, NAFDAC has instructed all zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove the contaminated batch of the product from circulation. Additionally, the agency will be conducting a comprehensive inspection of the manufacturing site, focusing on current Good Manufacturing Practices. The aim of this inspection is to identify the root cause of the contamination and ensure compliance with marketing authorization.
Furthermore, NAFDAC has directed the Nigerian Bottling Company Limited (Abuja plant), the company responsible for producing the affected batch, to recall the contaminated product and cooperate with NAFDAC for effective monitoring throughout the process.
