Prominent Niger Delta leader, Asari Dokubo, has urged President Bola Tinubu not to grant the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Dokubo made this statement following a meeting with President Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday.
Dokubo emphasized that allowing Kanu's release would amount to rewarding criminal activities and the brutal murder of innocent individuals, emphasizing that Kanu should be held accountable before the law.
Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his re-arrest in 2021, is currently facing trial on terrorism charges. Despite being granted bail by a Federal High Court in Abuja in 2017, Kanu violated the bail conditions and subsequently fled the country, leading to his subsequent re-arrest.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari had resisted pressure to release Kanu during his tenure. However, with a new government in power, calls for the release of the IPOB leader have emerged.
Expressing his stance on Kanu's detention, Dokubo asserted, "Releasing Nnamdi Kanu is rewarding criminality and the gruesome murder of innocent people. He should face the consequences of his actions and the instigations he has carried out."
Furthermore, Dokubo addressed the issue of security, highlighting the existence of full-scale conflicts in various parts of the country. Specifically, he pointed out the intense warfare initiated by the IPOB/ESN in the South East, which has resulted in the abandonment of numerous local communities, the closure of schools, and the shutdown of hospitals.
