Seun Kuti, a popular Nigerian singer and son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, was captured on camera assaulting a policeman on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State, sparking outrage on social media.
The video clip, which went viral, shows Kuti pushing the police officer and then slapping him while yelling at him.
While some people expressed disappointment and called for Kuti's sanction, others showed support for the musician.
The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, ordered Kuti's immediate arrest, and a full investigation into the incident has been launched. Kuti promised to cooperate with the police authorities, stating that whoever was wrong should be punished.
The police spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, condemned Kuti's actions, promising to hold the rights of the policeman and that if the cop was found guilty of any unprofessional conduct, he would also be punished.
