The Nigerian Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has launched the Electronic Certificate of Occupancy (e-CofO), which allows citizens to access their land titles and documents within 24 hours.
Speaking at the ceremony in Abuja, Fashola emphasized that the government is committed to reducing poverty and promoting prosperity and that the digitization of the federal lands registry would help increase the value of lands.
He also noted that the generation of secured documents would be printed by the Nigerian security printing and minting to eliminate forgery.
Fashola urged interested applicants to begin the process via https://lands.worksandhousing.gov.ng/.
He also stressed that the new process is part of the government’s commitment to reducing poverty and influencing prosperity.
Fashola shared his experience of finding land title applications dating back to 1992 upon resumption and highlighted that he signed about 6,685 of them during his tenure. He encouraged staff to embrace the new change and work judiciously for the benefit of Nigerians.
The IT solution will enable the minister, permanent secretary, and other relevant stakeholders to have easy access to the automated business of the customized solution. The web-based system will enable full audit on all staff actions, thereby enhancing productivity, efficiency, easy applications, and real-time payment.
Felix Appah, Director of Lands and Housing Development, FMWH, said the automation would ensure efficiency and improve productivity, as well as transparency.
He also said it would help to check any form of fraudulent activities which were prevalent in the analogue method of processing title documents.
The Federal Executive Council approved digital automation in 2021, and the contract was awarded to Messrs. IQSS Limited on February 17, 2022. At the event, three beneficiaries received their e-CofO.
