The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to launch an investigation into the activities of certain governors whose terms will end on May 29. The anti-graft agency has sent letters to some of the governors and is also focusing on the commissioners who served under them.
Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State acknowledged receiving a letter from the EFCC but criticized the agency for consistently criticizing governors.
He expressed concern over the statement made by EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa, who mentioned sending invitations to outgoing governors and commissioners to investigate alleged corruption and abuse of power during their tenure.
Matawalle stated that while politicians should be held accountable, the EFCC should conduct targeted investigations of public officials with fairness.
Matawalle questioned why the investigation was limited to governors and why the EFCC had not extended it to federal-level public servants.
The agency officials did not confirm the planned probe but suggested that any letters sent by the EFCC would not be blanket invitations.
Matawalle emphasized that the investigation should be comprehensive and not selective, criticizing the recent invitations and statements by the EFCC chairman as unbalanced, incomplete, hypocritical, and biased. He believed that Bawa's approach is counterproductive to the fight against corruption.
