The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have issued a stark warning to the Federal Government, announcing their intention to initiate a nationwide strike within the next fortnight.
Their discontent arises from the government's failure to uphold a comprehensive 16-point agreement reached with organized labor on October 2, 2023.
Leaders from both the NLC and TUC voiced their dismay, highlighting the government's apparent indifference to the widespread adversity experienced by citizens across the nation, despite concerted efforts from labor unions to foster workplace harmony.
In a joint statement, the NLC and TUC expressed deep regret at the necessity of such drastic action, attributing it to the persistent neglect of citizen welfare and the substantial hardships endured by Nigerian workers.
"Given these circumstances and understanding the urgency of the matter, as well as the imperative of safeguarding the rights and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens, the NLC and TUC have issued a firm ultimatum to the Federal Government," the statement read.
The ultimatum demands that the government fulfills its obligations within 14 days from February 9, 2024, underscoring the unions' determination to ensure the protection and defense of workers' rights and the broader citizenry.
