The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has made a plea to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to consider halting the ongoing nationwide strike, which commenced today. The appeal is accompanied by a request for the labor unions to allow the ongoing investigation by security agencies into the reported assault on NLC president, Joe Ajearo, in Imo State to reach its conclusion.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, the Director General of the NOA, emphasized that suspending the industrial action is crucial for the economic growth and development of the nation. Issa-Onilu urged for a sense of patriotism, highlighting the need for caution and empathy in the current national context.
Expressing concern about the reported assault, the NOA Director-General condemned the incident and disclosed that the Inspector General of Police has intervened by establishing a team to investigate and apprehend the perpetrators. He underscored that no Nigerian should endure such treatment from fellow citizens.
Issa-Onilu suggested that, instead of resorting to strikes, the labor unions should explore alternative avenues for resolving their grievances with the Federal Government. He pointed out that there are more constructive ways to address concerns, emphasizing that declaring an indefinite strike at this critical juncture would hinder progress and negatively impact the country's economy.
Highlighting the potential setbacks to the Nigerian economy during strike actions, Issa-Onilu stressed that the current period is not opportune, especially as the federal government is actively implementing policies aimed at revitalizing the economy for national development. He cautioned that incessant strikes have severe repercussions, detrimentally affecting the country's growth and further impoverishing its citizens.
