Tottenham Coach Claims VAR Is Undermining Referees' Authority

Ange Postecoglou has voiced his concern over the increasing reliance on VAR, claiming that it's eroding the authority of referees. His comments come in the wake of Tottenham's 4-1 home defeat to Chelsea, a match that saw an astonishing nine separate VAR checks and a whopping 21 minutes of added time.

Despite initially taking the lead through Dejan Kulusevski, Spurs succumbed to their first Premier League loss of the season. Their troubles were compounded as Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie were shown red cards on either side of halftime. A 35th-minute penalty converted by Cole Palmer, following Romero's dismissal due to a VAR review for a late tackle on Enzo Fernández, leveled the score. Udogie received a second yellow for a foul on Raheem Sterling.

Chelsea found it difficult to break down Tottenham's nine-man team, but Nicolas Jackson's hat-trick in the final 15 minutes secured a victory for Mauricio Pochettino in his return to Spurs, having been sacked by the club in November 2019.

Postecoglou, when asked about the extensive use of VAR in the match, expressed his displeasure, stating, "I don't like it. I don't like standing around, and I don't like the theatrics involved in waiting for decisions. But I know I'm in the minority on this. Throughout my 26 years, I was always willing to accept the referee's decisions, some going my way and some against. I just want the game to be played. However, when we find ourselves complaining about decisions week after week, this is the result. People will scrutinize every detail to ensure correctness, yet even then, we remain dissatisfied."

He went on to emphasize that VAR's extensive use is diminishing the referee's authority and suggested that referees no longer have full control over the game. However, he acknowledged the changing landscape of the sport and the necessity to adapt to it.

Postecoglou also stressed the futility of seeking a perfect game where no wrong decisions are made and partially placed the blame on managers who continually complain about refereeing decisions. He pointed out that such complaints have always existed but have been dealt with differently in the past. He expressed doubts about the viability of returning to the days when referees' decisions were more readily accepted, given the integration of technology and the growing demand for transparency in football.
