Vaccine Alliance Responds to UN Member States' Adoption of Political Declaration Regarding Emergency Preparedness

After a meeting centered on pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPPR) hosted by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly during its 78th session, global leaders have taken a significant stride in readying themselves for future emergencies. They achieved this by embracing a political declaration on PPPR.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, expressed its appreciation for the decision made by UN member states to adopt this crucial political declaration. The organization emphasizes its commitment to building health systems that prioritize people.

According to Gavi, this move represents a pivotal step in maintaining political dedication to ensuring the world's readiness for future challenges.

David Marlow, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gavi, conveyed his reaction to the UN member states' resolution in a statement. In his statement, he unequivocally stated, "We are certain that future pandemics will occur. The real question is whether we will be better prepared next time." Marlow further emphasized the significance of this declaration, highlighting that it signifies progress in breaking the cycle of panic and neglect, while also paving the way for a global framework to bolster future responses.

Furthermore, the political declaration underscores the urgent necessity of integrating health considerations into climate change adaptation initiatives, with a specific emphasis on fostering climate-resilient and people-centric health systems, as acknowledged by Marlow and Gavi.
