Nyesom Wike, formerly a two-term governor of Rivers State under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has labeled those advocating for his suspension from the party as "Reggae Dancers."
The statement came as Wike, now the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), addressed the press shortly after his induction into the government of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, August 21.
During the press conference, Wike, who served as a PDP governor, pointed out that he was bemused by the singling out of his case, given that 10 other PDP governors had also submitted recommendations for appointments to President Bola Tinubu. Expressing his stance, Wike commented, "I laugh at those Reggae dancers in PDP discussing suspension—ridiculous people. Ignore them, and let’s focus on serious matters. There’s no PDP Governor who didn’t make nominations for Mr. President. All of them made ten nominations each."
Moreover, shedding light on his decision to accept President Tinubu's offer, Wike disclosed that he had communicated with key PDP figures, including the national, zonal, and state chairmen. He emphasized that he had also sought advice from the minority leaders of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as his fellow state governor. According to Wike, the PDP leadership unanimously encouraged him to "take that appointment." As a result, he urged the Nigerian public to disregard the criticisms of those he referred to as "bad belle losers," who were demanding his suspension from the PDP.
