Former Vice President and presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has accused a group of former PDP governors known as the G-5 governors of seeking personal gain and protection from prosecution.
According to Atiku, their decision not to support him is driven by their own self-interest rather than patriotism, and he warned Nigerians not to be deceived by them.
Atiku's statement came in response to an interview given by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, where he referred to former Governor Nyesom Wike as "an average mad man." Atiku's Special Assistant on Public Communication, Mr Phrank Shaibu, criticized Fayose's remarks and emphasized that the G-5 governors were only interested in seeking relevance, securing appointments, and safeguarding themselves from legal consequences. Atiku further accused the governors of corrupt practices.
The former Vice President also criticized Fayose for his inconsistency, suggesting that Fayose should have openly campaigned for Bola Tinubu during the presidential election instead of changing his stance afterward. Atiku alleged that Fayose's actions were driven by a desire to evade his own corruption case and secure appointments for his son.
Shaibu supported Atiku's claims by highlighting Fayose's earlier public declaration of support for Atiku's candidacy and accused him of attempting to manipulate the situation to his advantage. Shaibu urged Nigerians not to be fooled by Fayose's deceptive tactics.
Atiku's statement underlines his belief that the G-5 governors are primarily concerned with their own interests rather than the well-being of the nation. He accuses them of seeking appointments, protection from prosecution, and using their positions to influence judicial proceedings. The former Vice President warned Nigerians to remain vigilant and not be swayed by their deceptive actions.
