Tragedy struck as a speedboat carrying a group of medical students, consisting of 14 individuals, capsized at the renowned Marina Resort in Calabar, Cross River state.
The incident occurred on Saturday, June 24, during a boat cruise organized as part of the NiMSA annual Health Week, which brought together medical students from various universities across Nigeria.
Eager to explore the city, the students decided to embark on the cruise at the Marina Resort. However, their excursion took a devastating turn when the boat suddenly capsized, leaving them struggling for their lives. Thankfully, 11 students were rescued from the water, but three individuals are still missing, raising concerns and intensifying the search efforts.
In response to this heartbreaking incident, Bassey Otu, the governor of Cross River state, has taken immediate action. He has ordered a thorough investigation into the boat mishap, emphasizing the need to ascertain the cause and prevent similar incidents in the future. Governor Otu expressed deep sadness over the situation, particularly noting that the missing students had traveled to Calabar to participate in the Nigeria Medical Students Games.
The governor, through his Chief Press Secretary, Emmanuel Ogbeche, has urged security and rescue agencies, as well as local villagers, to join forces in the search and rescue operation. Their collective mission is to locate the missing students as soon as possible and reunite them with their worried families.
This unfortunate event serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with maritime activities and the need for stringent safety measures to safeguard the lives of individuals enjoying recreational water outings.
