Abuja witnessed chaos as a torrential downpour, commencing as early as 6 am, left the renowned Trademore estate completely submerged. The flood resulted in extensive damage and destruction of properties worth millions, forcing residents to flee for safety.
On Friday afternoon, the scene was filled with despondent and helpless residents. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed to journalists at the estate that a driver of a Peugeot 406 with registration number YLA 681 FS tragically drowned in the flood. Fortunately, four other individuals were successfully rescued.
Trademore estate has been plagued by the devastating effects of floods over the years. However, during the rainy season of 2022, residents were relieved as they remained unaffected. Samuel Omole, a resident, recounted how several cars were swept away by the raging floodwaters.
Omole placed the blame on the developers of an estate in the vicinity who had directed water flow towards their area. He expressed, "This morning, there was heavy rainfall, and in no time, houses were inundated.
A man who had come to purchase medication from the pharmacy here sought refuge in his car until the rain subsided. Unfortunately, the car eventually succumbed to the flood, but thankfully, the man managed to escape. I am currently attempting to salvage my belongings. The flood was caused by the estate developer who deliberately directed water towards our side. If swift action is not taken to address this issue, what we have witnessed today will only be the beginning of our troubles."
