A fresh crisis has engulfed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as tensions rise between the factions supporting Atiku Abubakar, the party's candidate in the upcoming 2023 presidential election, and Nyesom Wike, the former governor of Rivers State.
The latest disagreement stems from the endorsement of Kingsley Chinda, a close ally of Wike, for the position of minority leader in the House of Representatives by the PDP Caucus.
According to The Nation, Chinda emerged as the consensus candidate of the PDP Representatives caucus during a party meeting held in Abuja on Friday, June 16. Initially, Atiku's camp had put forward Oluwole Oke from Osun State as their preferred choice for the position, but he eventually withdrew from the race.
Some PDP members who still harbored resentment towards Wike and his allies due to their lack of cooperation during the February 25 presidential election were reportedly unhappy with Chinda's selection.
Debo Ologunagba, the national publicity secretary of the PDP, had previously urged the public to disregard reports suggesting that a specific individual had been nominated as the preferred choice for the party's minority leader position in the House of Representatives. The endorsement of Chinda has further deepened the divide within the PDP, leaving the party grappling with yet another dilemma.
