In an effort to reduce net migration, the United Kingdom has implemented strict measures on student visa routes, as stated in an announcement made on Tuesday.
These restrictions particularly affect students from Nigeria and other countries, who will no longer be able to bring their family members along unless they are pursuing postgraduate research programs.
Additionally, the UK government has prohibited individuals from using a student visa as a means to enter the country for work purposes, citing a net migration of over 500,000 from June 2021 to June 2022.
Nevertheless, the government reasserted its commitment to the International Education Strategy, recognizing the economic benefits that students contribute to the UK.
It was emphasized that the terms of the graduate route would remain unchanged, and the reforms would be applicable to students commencing their studies from January 2023.
The UK government assured its collaboration with the higher education sector to explore alternative solutions, ensuring that exceptional students can still bring their dependents to the country.
Furthermore, to prevent abuse of the visa system, students will no longer be allowed to switch from the student visa route to work routes until they have completed their studies.
