A group of northerners who gathered at the Arewa House Kaduna on Friday for a one-day round table discussion on Nation Building and Democracy, organized by the Democratic Research Institute, have issued a communique demanding the leadership of the National Assembly and other ministerial appointments.
According to the communique signed by Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba and Dr. Benjamin Izra Dikki, the group insisted that the North must be given the leadership of the National Assembly and other ministerial appointments to be satisfied with the government.
They also stated that this demand was non-negotiable as the North was not in control of both the Executive and Judiciary arms of government.
The group emphasized the importance of political, economic incentives, and opportunities for the progress, transformation, and development of the region.
The group threatened to withdraw its support for the government and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) if their demands were not met in subsequent elections.
In his welcome address, Prof. Al-Mustapha Ussiju Medanar stated that the objective of the Roundtable discussion was to highlight and deepen the conversations around the roles and the place of the Northern region in strengthening Nigeria's democracy and fostering nation-building.
