The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed its dissatisfaction with President Bola Tinubu's announcement that fuel subsidies have been eliminated without consulting relevant stakeholders or implementing measures to mitigate the impact on workers.
The NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, criticized the insensitivity of the decision, which resulted in fuel price hikes and the shutdown of filling stations shortly after the announcement.
He emphasized that instead of delivering renewed hope as promised by the administration, President Tinubu's decision has caused tears and sorrow for millions of Nigerians, devaluing their lives by over 300 percent.
In a strongly worded statement, the NLC condemned the lack of consultation and called for the immediate withdrawal of the subsidy removal policy. The organization argued that the decision would have ripple effects on the economic well-being of the people and expressed concern about the timing and lack of adequate preparations.
They highlighted the need to address corruption in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), invest in mass transit systems and energy sector development, and lay the groundwork for a prosperous future before removing the subsidy.
The NLC further criticized the government's justification for the subsidy removal, pointing out inconsistencies in the claims made.
They questioned the assertion that the subsidy removal would stabilize the exchange rate and argued that it would lead to job losses and a recessionary impact on the economy. The statement emphasized the negative consequences for ordinary Nigerians, including higher prices for essential goods, reduced purchasing power, and increased hardship.
In conclusion, the NLC advised President Tinubu to adhere to his own economic theories and respect the welfare of the people instead of taking costly gambles that would further burden Nigerians.
