Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State has addressed the recent attack on US Consulate officials in Nigeria, offering his perspective on the likely cause of the incident.
Gunmen ambushed the convoy along Atani-Osamala Road in Ogbaru Local Government, killing two Consulate officials and two police officers.
Three individuals, including two police officers and their driver, were also abducted during a subsequent rescue operation.
Governor Soludo stated that the officials' decision to bypass the existing security infrastructure in the state and make separate security arrangements may have made them vulnerable to the attack.
He emphasized the need for improved coordination and rectification of such lapses to prevent similar incidents in the future. While condemning the attack, Governor Soludo assured cooperation with security agencies to apprehend the criminals responsible.
He highlighted the state's efforts over the past year to combat crime and restore law and order, maintaining that despite this incident, Anambra State remains one of the safest in Nigeria.
The governor appealed to residents to provide any information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the gunmen, promising a substantial reward for such assistance.
