In a decisive operation, Nigerian troops have dealt a significant setback to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) by neutralizing a suspected informant in a meticulously planned ambush in Borno State. The operation, part of the ongoing Operation Desert Sanity IV, underscores the military's relentless efforts to dismantle terrorist networks in Nigeria’s volatile northeast.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, troops from Sector 3 of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), operating under Operation Hadin Kai, executed the ambush in the Karagawaru area of Kaga Local Government Area. The operation was carried out by the 29 Task Force Brigade in the early hours of Friday, May 9, 2025.
A military source revealed that the troops strategically positioned themselves at a suspected crossing point. At approximately 12:30 a.m., they spotted and engaged the target. The suspect, believed to be a key informant for ISWAP, was neutralized during the confrontation. The troops recovered a locally fabricated Dane gun and a bicycle, items reportedly used by the suspect for reconnaissance and communication activities. By 3:40 a.m., the troops returned to their base without any casualties, marking the operation as a resounding success.
Operation Hadin Kai, launched to combat Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents in Nigeria’s northeast, has intensified efforts to disrupt terrorist operations. The MNJTF, comprising troops from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, and previously Niger, plays a critical role in this fight. The recent operation in Karagawaru is part of Operation Desert Sanity IV, a campaign aimed at targeting terrorist hideouts and supply lines in Borno State.
This success follows other recent victories. On the same day, troops of the 24 Task Force Brigade, in collaboration with hybrid forces, ambushed and eliminated two Boko Haram insurgents in Koibe village, Dikwa Local Government Area, further disrupting enemy movements. Earlier in the week, on May 7, 2025, troops stationed in Izge, Gwoza Local Council, repelled an ISWAP attack on their Forward Operating Base, neutralizing several insurgents and capturing combat equipment. These operations highlight the military’s proactive stance in countering the resurgence of terrorist activities.
Despite these successes, the fight against ISWAP and Boko Haram remains complex. Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum recently raised concerns about the regrouping of insurgents in the Tumbus areas of Lake Chad and the Mandara Hills within the Sambisa Forest. Zulum noted setbacks in military operations, pointing out that insurgents often reclaim areas after troops disengage. He also highlighted the increasing sophistication of ISWAP attacks, including the use of armed drones, as seen in a recent assault in Wulgo.
The withdrawal of Niger from the MNJTF in March 2025 has further complicated regional counter-terrorism efforts. The MNJTF, established in 2015 to counter cross-border insurgent activities, has faced challenges due to poor coordination and divisions among member states. Niger’s exit, coupled with Chad’s earlier threats to withdraw after significant losses, has raised concerns about the task force’s operational effectiveness.
The neutralization of the suspected ISWAP informant is a tactical victory that weakens the group’s intelligence network. Informants play a critical role in facilitating terrorist operations, providing information on troop movements and civilian targets. By targeting such individuals, the Nigerian military disrupts ISWAP’s ability to plan and execute attacks.
The operation also reflects the importance of intelligence-driven missions. The troops’ ability to identify and ambush the suspect at a known crossing point demonstrates improved coordination and situational awareness. However, the broader challenge remains: sustaining these gains amidst logistical constraints, regional instability, and the insurgents’ adaptability.
As Operation Hadin Kai continues, the Nigerian military must address the structural issues highlighted by Governor Zulum, including the need for sustained presence in cleared areas and enhanced regional cooperation. The MNJTF’s role remains vital, but its effectiveness depends on resolving internal divisions and compensating for Niger’s withdrawal.
For now, the successful ambush in Karagawaru is a testament to the bravery and precision of Nigeria’s troops. It sends a clear message to ISWAP and Boko Haram: the fight against terrorism in Borno State is far from over.
