This call was spurred by controversial remarks from the agency’s CEO, Mr. Ahmed Farouk, regarding the Dangote Refinery. Farouk accused the refinery of producing substandard products, a claim viewed by many Nigerians as an attempt to undermine local petroleum refining and promote the continued importation of refined products.
In a press release signed by NANS Secretary-General Comrade David Barieka, which was made available to journalists, the student body expressed outrage over Farouk’s comments. They warned that if he is not removed immediately, they would mobilize students and youths for massive protests until appropriate action is taken.
“We strongly condemn Mr. Ahmed’s efforts to discredit Dangote Refinery, our nation's only indigenous petroleum refining industry, at a time when Nigeria lacks functioning refineries. This threatens the future of Nigerian youths and students and seems to be a ploy by subsidy cabals to maintain their control, perpetuating a system that has long held our nation hostage,” Barieka stated.
“Mr. President, we bring to your attention the serious consequences of Mr. Ahmed’s actions. His stance is not only misguided but also harmful to Nigeria’s progress, economic growth, and energy security. By attempting to stifle the Dangote Refinery, he is sabotaging our nation’s efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in petroleum production and refining.
“As patriots, we urge you to take immediate action against Mr. Ahmed’s misconduct. His actions are unacceptable, and we demand his removal as CEO of NMDPRA. We cannot afford to remain passive while our nation’s future is compromised by individuals prioritizing personal interests over national progress.
“NANS will mobilize Nigerian students and youths for a massive protest against this injustice. It will be the mother of all protests, and we will relocate the NANS headquarters to the NMDPRA office until our demands are met. We will not relent until our nation’s interests are prioritized,” he declared.
