President Tinubu Receives Warning of Potential Mass Uprising Amidst Hardship

In a stern warning directed at President Bola Tinubu, media scholar and seasoned columnist Professor Farooq Kperogi has sounded the alarm bells over what he deems as an "unnaturally rising price spiral" in Nigeria, asserting that it poses a severe threat to the nation's social fabric. Kperogi's admonition comes hot on the heels of recent protests erupting in various Nigerian states, including Niger, Kano, and Osun, which he perceives as ominous signals for the Tinubu administration.

In his latest weekly column, Kperogi cautions that if resistance to Tinubu's perceived "punishingly heartless neoliberal economic policies" escalates into a nationwide upheaval, the southwest geopolitical zone, traditionally seen as Tinubu's stronghold, may not stand firm in his support. Emphasizing the imperative for President Tinubu to prioritize good governance and compassion, Kperogi underscores that this is the sole defense against the looming peril.

While acknowledging the release of thousands of metric tons of grains by the government as a positive gesture, Kperogi asserts that such measures fall short of addressing the brewing discontent and potential mass rebellion. He warns that these actions, at best, might only serve to temporarily delay the inevitable unrest.

Recent protests in Minna, the capital of Niger state, where thousands took to the streets decrying severe hunger and the soaring cost of living, serve as poignant examples of the simmering discontent among Nigerians. Similar demonstrations have unfolded in Kano, Plateau, and Kogi states, with grievances over the escalating cost of living driving disenfranchised youths to stage peaceful protests in Osogbo, the capital of Osun state. Chanting songs of frustration and brandishing placards, these youths are emblematic of a populace grappling with the harsh realities of Nigeria's economic challenges.
