According to a statement released by NAF Spokesman AVM Edward Gabkwet, the incident unfolded on the evening of February 14 along Accra Road, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, at approximately 7:28 pm. Air Commodore Ijudigal, while on his way home from work, encountered a distressing scene as he witnessed an Abuja-painted taxi, identified as a Mazda 323 with registration BWR 232 XB, speeding in reverse with terrified passengers onboard calling out for help.
In a swift and instinctive response, Air Commodore Ijudigal engaged in pursuit, utilizing his official vehicle to block the escape path of the criminals. The confrontation escalated when the 'one-chance' vehicle collided with Ijudigal's vehicle, resulting in significant damage to both cars and causing the offenders' vehicle to skid off into a nearby garden.
Undeterred by the collision, Air Commodore Ijudigal immediately sprang into action, chasing down one of the fleeing occupants of the taxi with the help of bystanders at the scene. With their assistance, the driver of the 'one-chance' vehicle along with two other suspects, one male and one female, were apprehended, and two female victims were successfully rescued from harm's way.
Following the apprehension, Air Commodore Ijudigal personally coordinated with the police, ensuring the transfer of the captured suspects to the FCT Commissioner of Police, Mr. Benneth Igweh. The commissioner commended Ijudigal for his exceptional bravery and swift action, emphasizing the significance of his intervention in thwarting the criminal activity and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, Chief of the Air Staff, also lauded Ijudigal's courageous and selfless service in safeguarding the community against such threats. Currently serving as the Deputy Director of Logistics at the Defence Headquarters, Air Commodore Ijudigal's actions stand as a testament to the dedication and valor exhibited by members of the Nigerian Air Force in ensuring the safety and security of the populace.
