In a bid to avert potential turmoil, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to hold off on their proposed strike action for the betterment of the nation.
During a press briefing held in Abeokuta over the weekend, Mr. Pedro Obi, the President of NANS, extended this plea, expressing solidarity with the shared struggles faced by Nigerians, particularly the youth and student populace, amidst prevailing economic challenges.
The looming strike, scheduled in response to the government's failure to honor agreements forged on October 2 following the removal of fuel subsidies, is feared to exacerbate the already dire economic situation.
Obi emphasized the potential repercussions of such a move, highlighting its adverse impacts on national security, the economy, and notably, the academic trajectory of students nationwide. While acknowledging the legitimate grievances of the labor unions and their right to advocate for workers' rights through strike action, Obi implored for a reconsideration of their stance.
Suggesting dialogue and negotiation as more constructive avenues, he underscored the risks of civil unrest and economic instability posed by a nationwide strike. Emphasizing the importance of finding mutually beneficial solutions without resorting to extreme measures, Obi stressed the significance of prioritizing the welfare of all sectors of society, including workers and students.
Furthermore, Obi urged the Federal Government to expedite the implementation of the new minimum wage, asserting its potential to alleviate the hardships faced by the populace. In his closing remarks, he reiterated the necessity of inclusive discussions to ensure equitable and just resolutions that safeguard the rights and well-being of all stakeholders.
