Inspector-General of Police Commends Lagos Officer's Integrity in Turning Down N4m Bribe

Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has lauded the integrity displayed by SP Rilwan Kasumu and his team, members of the police tactical unit stationed at Area K, Marogbo, Lagos State Command. Their principled stand came to light during an investigation into drug peddling and possession of illegal ammunition, where they turned down a staggering N4 million bribe.

The operation led to the apprehension of Esther Newman Obiekezie, alias Candy, a 42-year-old resident of No. 6, Mojirade Street, Ilogbo Lagos, on February 6. Candy was found involved in the distribution of a substance known as ICE, and a substantial quantity of the illicit substance, along with AK47 live ammunition, was seized during her arrest.

During the course of the inquiry, Akete Esther, a 43-year-old woman, and Oke Okebalam, a 49-year-old man from Ajangbadi Lagos, approached the station in Ijanikin. They sought the release of Candy and attempted to sway the authorities with a N4 million bribe. Their plea included a request to halt police interference in Esther's illicit drug trade.

In response, the police officer in charge promptly seized the bribe money, marked it as evidence, and proceeded to apprehend the duo for further investigation and potential prosecution.

In a statement released by Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Thursday, the rejection of the bribe underscores the unwavering commitment of the Force to combat crime using ethical and professional methods.

The IGP reiterated the Force's dedication to leveraging all available resources and implementing effective anti-crime strategies to tackle various forms of criminal activities across Nigeria.
