The Federal Government took action yesterday to address the escalating food prices across the country by instructing the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency Food Intervention to intervene promptly. They reassured Nigerians that there was no shortage of food but rather alleged that certain individuals were exploiting the depreciation of the Naira to inflate food prices.
The meeting, convened by Femi Gbajabiamila, the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, was prompted by the President. This move came after women and youths in Minna, Niger State, protested on Monday against the high costs of food items, urging political leaders to alleviate their plight.
Governor Umar Bago pointed fingers at a cartel whom he accused of hoarding food to drive up prices deliberately, alleging their aim was to cause hunger and provoke unrest among the populace. Meanwhile, during the protest in Minna, Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf announced intentions to discuss hunger issues with the President.
Following the meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed that food items from the National Food Reserves would be released to stabilize prices. Additionally, the government plans to engage major millers and commodity traders to ensure the availability of food items.
Idris emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the situation, stating that discussions were ongoing, with further meetings scheduled. He assured that immediate actions would follow as the government endeavors to provide relief to Nigerians facing hardships due to the rising food prices.
