Multiple individuals within the academic sector, speaking anonymously, confirmed this development in Abuja on Monday.
Professor Gbolahan Bolarin, chairperson of ASUU at the Federal University of Technology, Minna, confirmed the news, stating, "Yes, it is true. Payment has started rolling in."
President Bola Tinubu had authorized the release of four out of eight months' worth of withheld salaries for ASUU members back in October 2023. These salaries had been withheld during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who had invoked a 'No Work, No Pay policy' against certain university-based unions during an eight-month strike in 2022.
The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, recently announced that the government has increased salaries for university workers by 35 percent. Additionally, universities have been granted autonomy, being removed from the Integrated Payment and Payroll Information System. Mamman also stated that universities no longer require waivers to recruit and fill vacancies.
These decisions were reportedly made after informal discussions with unions representing tertiary institutions.
