A collective known as Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano, representing the electorate of Kano, has forwarded a formal request to the Kano State House of Assembly urging a reassessment of the legislation that established four additional emirates during the tenure of former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. Their petition, dated February 5, 2024, also advocates for the reinstatement of the deposed Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II.
The group's appeal aligns with recent statements made by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, hinting at a potential review of Ganduje's decision regarding the Kano emirate.
However, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has cautioned against disrupting the current emirate structure, citing concerns about upsetting the peace in the ancient city. The opposition party advised Governor Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) to proceed cautiously to maintain the existing harmony in the state.
Yan Dangwalen Jihar Kano emphasized in their letter to the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly the potential benefits of consolidating the emirates into a single entity, believing it would promote unity and progress. They highlighted Sanusi's previous contributions to social and economic development during his tenure as Emir and argued that his reinstatement could foster stability within the state.
However, the APC dismissed the group's demands, labeling them as "fairy tales" and defending the actions taken during Ganduje's administration, including the creation of new emirates. The party emphasized the importance of respecting traditional institutions and suggested that the group's sudden objections lacked merit.
In response to the APC's stance, the NNPP's Kano State Chairman, Alhaji Hashimu Dungurawa, maintained that everyone is entitled to their opinion, indicating a divergence within the political landscape regarding the issue.
Former Governor Ganduje's decision to split the Kano emirate into five and subsequently dethrone Sanusi in 2019 sparked controversy. Sanusi was accused of disobedience to lawful directives, leading to his removal from office and exile to Nasarawa State.
The situation underscores ongoing tensions surrounding traditional authority and governance in Kano State, with differing perspectives on the path forward.
