Nigerian Air Force Secures Deal for 24 Italian Aircraft, Set to Upgrade Aging Fighter Jet Fleet

The Nigerian Air Force has finalized a deal with an Italian defense company, Leonardo, for the procurement of 24 M-346 Master aircraft. Valued at approximately €1.2 billion, the agreement was reported by Military Africa on November 7, 2023, with the expected delivery of the aircraft scheduled for 2024.

The report highlighted that discussions were underway to select suitable armaments for the advanced aircraft, including munitions, missiles, precision-guided bombs, and rockets. The M-346 Master planes are intended to replace the aging Dassault Alpha jet A/E, aiming to elevate Nigeria's aerial capabilities and strengthen its defense strategies.

According to the report, this significant step in modernizing Nigeria's air force reflects the country's commitment to staying at the forefront of defense technology. The acquisition of the M-346 Master aircraft is part of a broader effort to enhance Nigeria's air force capabilities, aligning with its strategic defense objectives.

Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, the spokesman for the Air Force, confirmed the acquisition when contacted. He stated, "Confirmed. This has been mentioned severally by the NAF at various forums." The report also emphasized that with the addition of the Master aircraft, the Nigerian Air Force would become the most powerful in the region. The existing fleet of armed Chinese and Turkish drones further contributes to solidifying Nigeria's position as a formidable force in the air.
