Transportation Minister, Saidu Ahmed Alkali, has raised concerns with the Managing Director of the Nigerian Rail Corporation (NRC), Mr. Fidet Okhiria, regarding the deteriorating state of the Abuja Train Station. The minister's inquiry was initiated during an unannounced visit to the Idu Train Terminal situated in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Accompanied solely by two security personnel and a pair of journalists, Alkali arrived at the station around 3 p.m. His motivation for the visit was prompted by complaints he had received about the subpar condition of both the station's facilities and its workforce. He expressed his purpose, stating, "I've taken it upon myself to inspect the situation firsthand. Experience has taught me that planned visits often result in preparations being made in anticipation of your arrival."
Alkali shared that his attention had been drawn to grievances raised by security escorts who claimed to have not received their allowances for the past five months. He also noted the station's overall neglect, citing unkempt coaches and unclean seats. He further highlighted a significant issue concerning non-functioning escalators, which significantly hindered elderly and disabled individuals from utilizing the train services.
During the visit, the minister informed that the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation would be summoned before the ministry on Tuesday to provide insights into the situation. He underscored the gravity of the matter, stating that necessary disciplinary measures could be taken depending on the explanation presented.
Taking swift action, Alkali mandated the prompt repair of all malfunctioning escalators within a 48-hour window. Additionally, he directed that pending allowances owed to the train security escorts be settled without delay.
In terms of his strategy for enhancing the efficiency of rail services across the nation, the minister pledged his alignment with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda. Alkali vowed to collaborate with the Ministry of Defence to introduce unmanned aerial vehicles for heightened security surveillance. This move, he believes, would ensure comprehensive protection.
As the situation unfolds, all eyes are now on the impending meeting with the Managing Director, which could potentially bring about crucial changes in the Nigerian rail system.
