In a surprising turn of events on Tuesday, July 4th, Senator Simon Mwadkon emerged victorious as the new Senate Minority Leader, defeating Senator Aminu Tambuwal in a fiercely contested battle.
Despite the efforts of his political rival, former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, Mwadkon managed to secure the leadership position. The loss for Wike and Tambuwal marks the end of their rivalry, as they both failed in their bid for control over the minority caucus of the 10th Senate, according to a report by Daily Trust.
Leading up to this outcome, Wike had engaged in several meetings with Senate President Godswill Akpabio in an attempt to promote a specific senator for the position. Meanwhile, Tambuwal had publicly expressed his interest in assuming the role of the minority leader. However, it was Akpabio who ultimately announced the new leaders of the minority caucus on July 4th.
The new minority caucus leadership is as follows: Senator Simon Davou Mwadkon, representing the People's Democratic Party (PDP) from Plateau, has been appointed as the Minority Leader. Senator Oyewumi Olalere, also from the PDP, representing Osun, will serve as the Deputy Minority Leader. Senator Darlington Nwokocha from the Labour Party (LP), representing Abia, has been named as the Minority Whip, and Rufai Hanga from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), representing Kano, will take up the position of Deputy Minority Whip.
